Flexible Day Count Ramadan Gifting
Brief
The objective was to create two sets of Advent Calendars for L’Oréal, one containing 30 and another 10 of their evergreen products as Ramadan gifts for loyal customers and influencers. The design needed to capture the spirit of Ramadan. After exploring several ideas, a lantern-shaped box concept was chosen.
This was a complex design: an outer lantern-shaped box housed a smaller inner lantern box, suspended by a chain at the top, mimicking a real lantern. The unboxing experience was key, with recipients pulling out the inner box to reveal 30 or 10 gifts. The aesthetic was subtle and elegant, using a blue and gold palette to reflect luxury and sophistication. Inside, 30 compartments were concealed by perforated flaps, each printed with a golden message for every day.
Challenges
The total weight of the products reached 15 kg, far exceeding initial estimates.
Determining the perfect chain thickness was critical — it needed to support the weight while remaining visually delicate.
Ensuring the paperboard structure was durable without compromising the refined design.
Solution
After multiple experiments, it was clear the chain could not attach to the top of the lantern cone as originally planned. A support mechanism was engineered to fix the chain to the bottom of the box, providing stability and strength while preserving the intended unboxing experience. To enhance the aesthetic, the chain was gold-coated, perfectly complementing the gold foiling details and harmonizing with the overall design.
Outcome
The final product was a stunning success — visually striking, structurally robust, and deeply evocative of Ramadan’s spirit. It was warmly received by the client and their customers, delivering an unforgettable gifting experience that balanced creativity, functionality, and luxury.
