Objective:
To print a children’s board book teaching Alif Baah Taah in Iraqi dialect—covering all 28 letters with corresponding images and words.
Brief
Referred to us by one of our long-standing clients, Dardasha.
“We’ve seen the work you’ve done and would like to create something similar, but with different specifications. The book needs to be smaller in size, with a higher number of pages. This is a short run as we’re testing the market on an e-commerce platform. Once successful, we’ll scale based on demand.
Currently, books like this are not available with a clear distinction of the Iraqi dialect.”
The requirement was clear: a 20 x 20 cm board book with layflat (K-binding), gloss lamination, and round corners.
At first glance, it seemed like a straightforward project—but it turned out to be far more complex.
Challenges
- Requirement for each sheet to be quadruple pasted to achieve extra thickness
- High page count (14 spreads) resulting in an unusually thick board book
- Ensuring the binding between inner pages and cover remained seamless and strong despite the bulk
- Maintaining durability without compromising on finish or usability
Solution
We began with a sample using 400 gsm foodboard, pasted back-to-back with lamination and the required finish but the client wasn’t satisfied.
So, we went back to the drawing board.
This time, each spread was printed on 350 gsm foodboard, then layered with an additional 350 gsm sheet. The entire book was then pasted back-to-back, effectively creating a quadruple-pasted structure that achieved the desired thickness and feel.
The final binding with the cover required extreme precision and was carefully executed with a detailed hand-finishing process to ensure strength and longevity.
Outcome
A happy client and a successful product.
The project has led to repeat orders, reinforcing both the quality of the product and the trust built through the process.
