Entrepreneur and mum, Ms. Reem & her husband visited us in 2019 after meeting a number of printers for her Children’s board book project. Reem’s E-commerce ideas was to publish Children’s book in Arabic for the Arabic speaking diaspora living in the UAE. As exciting as the project idea was, the challenges she faced was quality & safety as her audience was to be young children along with keeping the aesthetics intact. Second was, being a start-up she needed to print only a few titles with minimum quantity.
Given that brief we started\our collaboration with first things first, getting her artwork ready for the printable format. Using professional designing software we first demonstrated the exact size & how her matter & images would fit into the page. Matters that would be printed on the spine & the sequence all throughout each title. However miniscule it may seem but artworking matters a lot especially in publishable content. It’s important before going to print, the client is completely satisfied & gets what is expected. Besides, if we did get repeat orders then setting a template right for her designer the first time would save her & us a lot of pre press time in the future.
The production process was where the real expectation of the client was to be met. Ms. Reem’s benchmark was a product that would match the European standard of board books. To achieve that we picked an eco-friendly, 300gsm foodboard material that would meet the safety requirements & bring the desired rigidity for longer durability. For every page to completely open displaying the content & smaller hands to independently manage the opening & closing with ease, layflat binding is the only best option.So we back to back pasted each page, rounded the edges & gloss laminated every page to make it child friendly, spill proof board books.
But all of this couldn’t be achieved without involving the client in every process.
Result – We started as 5 title x 100 books each has successfully grown to 15 title x 100 every quarter. Our small contribution to Reem’s greater success in years to come.
