Objective:
To present architectural work in a highly artistic, collectible coffee table book format—designed for long-term keepsake value with a limited, curated print run.
Brief
The project involved creating a highly curated coffee table book to showcase the architect’s portfolio in an artistic and collectible format. Designed as a limited print run, the book featured a custom size of 60 × 60 cm (open) and 30 × 60 cm (closed) with 176 image-heavy pages. A key requirement was a layflat format to allow uninterrupted 180° spreads. The production demanded precise color calibration, especially for consistent grey tones across pages. The book was to be produced on a balanced substrate, not too light or heavy, finished with varnished inner pages, and bound in a hard case with a faux leather cover enhanced by foil stamping, debossing, and selective UV printing. Additionally, a custom hard case sleeve was required to house the book.
Challenges
- Managing production feasibility for an oversized format
- Selecting a cost-effective printing method for a limited print run
- Achieving accurate and consistent grey tone color calibration
- Identifying the right substrate balancing weight, thickness, and flexibility
- Executing layflat (K-binding) with non-conventional wide-format media
- Aligning client expectations with technical and production constraints
Solution
The approach began with evaluating multiple printing methods, including offset, short-run digital, and wide-format printing. Offset was used to establish a benchmark for color accuracy, while short-run digital was ruled out due to size limitations. Wide-format printing was ultimately selected as the most viable solution. Extensive testing was conducted across substrates ranging from 170 gsm to 350 gsm, leading to the selection of a 200 gsm art coated media with gloss lamination, balancing durability and weight. Color outputs were carefully matched against the offset benchmark to ensure consistency, particularly in grey tones. For binding, specialized adjustments were made to achieve a reliable layflat finish using wide-format media, ensuring flexibility without compromising structure. The book was completed with a faux leather hard case featuring foil stamping, debossing, selective UV printing, and a custom hard case sleeve for protection and presentation.
Outcome
The final result was a striking, museum-quality coffee table book that successfully combined scale, craftsmanship, and visual impact. Measuring 60 × 60 cm when open and weighing approximately 10 kg, the book delivers seamless layflat spreads across all 176 pages, allowing uninterrupted viewing of architectural imagery. The carefully calibrated color reproduction ensured consistent grey tones throughout, while the premium materials and finishes elevated the book into a true collectible. Produced in a limited run, the project stands as a statement piece—both a functional portfolio and a work of art designed to command presence on any coffee table.
